Golden Sun might be the best RPG series to grace any Nintendo console. Well it's my favorite anyways.

If you couldn't tell by now, RPGs are kind of my thing. There is just something about interacting with a good plot that you can't get in any other medium that makes video games so great, and almost no genre has better storytelling (usually) than RPGs. That and they usually have a pretty wicked musical score, case in point Golden Sun for the Game Boy Advance.

Camelot Software Planning happens to be one of my favorite studios that Nintendo partners with largely because of their work with Golden Sun. I was absolutely blown away with the game when I first played it so many years ago. To this day, you would be hard pressed to find a better looking or sounding game on the handheld. The reason I don't know how to use the chemical formula is because  I was playing Golden Sun all semester in my backpack while pretending to study. Yeah, true story.

To be honest I'm not really a huge fan of turn based RPGs, but Golden Sun with its interesting story, colorful world, and fantastic battle scenes, the game had me hooked from beginning to end. Well, all three games did actually. I must say that I didn't quite enjoy the DS Golden Sun quite as much as the GBA ones, but it was well worth a play. I really hope that if Nintendo decides to offer GBA games for download on the 3DS virtual console, that the Golden Sun series makes an appearance.

  1. I've never played any of the Golden Sun games. I didn't choose my own games when I had a GBA, and when I tried to play it now, they are just too grainy and not-charming to play.

Do you have any opinions on the DS version? Not that it is particularly expensive to pick up now-a-days, but money is money, and justifying spending it is hard!

    1. Can't say that I would recommend it to you, especially if you didn't like the others. Half of the charm of the DS Golden Sun is seeing how the characters develop throughout the 3 games. It is a good game, but not quite as good as the GBA games in my opinion.
